In the study, the subjects showed greater activation of inflammatory signaling on mornings after they had stayed awake during the hours of 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM, as compared to nights when they slept normally.

Inflammation is at the root of several chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation turns the immune system against healthy tissue. As inflammation increases, your body becomes more susceptible to disease.

Dr. Michael Irwin, lead author of the study, said, ““Physical and psychological stress brought on in part by grinding work, school, and social schedules is keeping millions of Americans up at night. America’s sleep habits are simply not healthy. Our findings suggest even modest sleep loss may play a role in common disorders that affect sweeping segments of the population.”

Are you getting quality sleep every night? If not, you’re inviting inflammation into your body. Getting a good night’s sleep every night will decrease your risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, certain cancers, and autoimmune disorders.

To get quality sleep, stick to a regular sleep schedule, avoid exposure to light at night, and get a healthy amount of sun exposure every day. This will help to regulate your body’s circadian rhythms.

Sounds Like Sleep audios will also promote quality sleep and combat inflammation.

Based on Brain Resonance Technology, the audios will help you fall asleep easier, experience deeper, more restful sleep, and feel rejuvenated the next day.

Yet women face many potential challenges to getting a good night’s sleep.

In general, women tend to sleep more than men, but their sleep is lighter and more easily disturbed. Women are more likely to feel tired after a full night of sleep.

Major life changes, illness, medication, hormonal changes, and poor sleep habits can all affect a woman’s sleep. Millions of women also suffer from various sleep disorders.

Pregnancy can greatly impact a women’s sleep. Physical discomfort can make it hard to sleep, especially during the third trimester. Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are also more common during pregnancy, along with restless leg syndrome and leg cramps. Iron supplementation may help with restless leg syndrome.

The hormonal and physical changes that accompany menopause can also affect a woman’s sleep. Insomnia is more common during menopause, and obstructive sleep apnea is more common among postmenopausal women.

Common sleep disorders among women include:

Insomnia – Insomnia is more common among women than men. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, wake up too early, or feel tired after sleeping, then you likely suffer from insomnia.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea – When tissue in the back of your throat blocks your airway, it usually causes you to wake up; this is called obstructive sleep apnea, and it has been linked to serious health problems like heart failure, high blood pressure, and stroke. It’s also associated with loud snoring. Because women don’t snore as loudly as men in general, obstructive sleep apnea can be more difficult to detect among women. For women, the sleep disorder is often associated with depression or insomnia.

Snoring – Yes, women snore, too! About 24 percent of women snore. Loud snoring may be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea.

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) – RLS refers to an intense urge to move the legs. It’s twice as common for women than men, and it can cause severe sleep disruption.

Sleep related eating disorder – Sleep related eating disorder usually consists of binge eating after waking up during the night. Most people with sleep related eating disorders are women, and many of them are only partially awake when it occurs.

Leg cramps – Leg cramps are more common for women and often disturb their sleep.

Nightmares – A nightmare is a dream that’s bad enough to wake you up. Women report nightmares more often than men.

Sounds Like Sleep audios will correct many common sleep disorders among women. But too many men put sleep on the bottom of their to-do list.

Sleep recharges the body and mind, increases energy, and enhances performance. Unfortunately, many men don’t even realize that they’re not getting enough sleep.

You’re probably not getting enough sleep if you:

Feel tired during the day.

Have a hard time paying attention.

Feel unmotivated.

Are irritable or grouchy.

Start to doze during the day.

Plan to go to bed early enough so that you can get at least seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Balance your time so that you can make sleep a priority in your life.

Many men don’t get enough sleep because of their job. You might bring your work home, constantly check your email, or worry about work problems at night. Leave your work at the office! This will help you to unwind and prepare for sleep when you get home.

Find other ways to relax. Exercise regularly to release excess physical energy, but don’t work out too close to bedtime. If you’ve got a problem on your mind, talk to somebody about it! Simply getting the problem off your chest will relieve a great deal of anxiety.

Life changes may cause a loss of sleep, too. Marriage, divorce, births, deaths, new jobs, relocating – they can all cause high levels of stress. Major life changes often lead to depression, too. Such changes often disrupt the quality of sleep. You may find yourself tossing and turning, unable to sleep, or lying in bed with no motivation to get up.

Too many men keep their feelings of anxiety and depression bottled up inside. Again, if you have a problem, talk to somebody about it. It doesn’t have to be a shrink. A friend or family member will work just as well.

Addictions to alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine disturb the sleep patterns of many men. If you drink, smoke, or consume caffeine, try not to do so near bedtime. Other bad habits that prevent sleep include television watching and Internet use.

Common sleep disorders among men include:

sleep schedules can be just as harmful to your wellbeing as losing sleep. If you go to bed and wake up at different times, this disrupts your body’s natural rhythm, which can affect your mood, appetite, and other aspects of your health. Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea – Men are twice as likely as women to suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when tissue in the throat collapses during sleep. This keeps air from getting into the lungs and usually wakes people up. Although obstructive sleep apnea is common, extreme cases can be dangerous. Signs of obstructive sleep apnea include loud snoring, frequently waking up during the night, and daytime sleepiness. Talk to your doctor if you think that you might have obstructive sleep apnea.

Narcolepsy – Narcolepsy is extreme sleepiness that can cause people to suddenly fall asleep during the day.

Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder – If you get into the habit of going to bed very late, you may set yourself up for Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder (DSP). Consistently staying up late and sleeping late will throw off the timing of your body’s internal clock. If you suffer from DSP, avoid bright lights at night, and get plenty of sunshine during the day.

Jet Lag – Jet lag and shift-work sleep disorders also throw off the body’s internal clock, making it hard to sleep well. Melatonin supplements may help, along with full spectrum light therapy in the morning.

Poor Sleep Hygiene – Another term for poor sleep hygiene is bad sleep habits. If you drink alcohol or caffeine before bedtime or stay up late watching TV, then you have bad sleep habits.

Sounds Like Sleep audios will correct many common sleep disorders among men. Based on Brain Resonance Technology, the audios will help you fall asleep easier, reset your body’s internal clock, sleep deeper, and feel rejuvenated the next day.

Due to longer work hours and worries about the economy, Americans are losing sleep and dozing off at work, in their cars, and in other places besides their beds.

“Nearly 50 million Americans chronically suffer from sleep problems and disorders that affect their careers, their personal relationships, and safety on our roads,” said Darrel Drobnich of the NSF. “Longer workdays and more access to colleagues and the workplace through the Internet and other technology appear to be causing Americans to get less sleep. Reciprocally, the effects of sleep loss on work performance are costing U.S. employers tens of billions of dollars a year in lost productivity. It’s time for American workers and employers to make sleep a priority,”

The NSF poll found that:

29 percent of those polled fell asleep or became very sleepy at work in the past month

36 percent have nodded off or fallen asleep while driving.

32 percent reported that they drive drowsy at least 1 to 2 times per month and 26 percent drive drowsy during the workday.

20 percent have sex less often or have lost interest in sex because they are too sleepy.

14 percent have missed family events, work functions, and leisure activities in the past month due to sleepiness.

12 percent were late to work in the past month because of sleepiness.

32 percent of those surveyed say they only get a good night’s sleep a few nights per month.

65 percent of Americans report experiencing a sleep problem, such as difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night, and waking feeling unrefreshed at least a few times each week, with nearly half of those saying they experience that sleep problem almost every night.

10 percent of respondents said that they use sleep aids.

Nearly half of those polled said that they wake up feeling unrefreshed in the morning or were awake a lot during the night several nights each week.

“Studies show that habitually getting inadequate sleep (less than seven or eight hours of sleep each night) creates long-lasting changes to one’s ability to think and function well during the day,” said Thomas J. Balkin, PhD, of the NSF. “These negative effects can accrue slowly over weeks, months, and even years of inadequate sleep habits and cannot simply be reversed by a few nights of good sleep.”

Longer Work Hours Lead to Poor Sleep Quality

“With Americans working such long hours on top of their other responsibilities like childcare and household maintenance, something has to give. Unfortunately, that something is usually nighttime sleep,” said Drobnich. “When work and daily activities demand so much of our time, sleep is often sacrificed. People tend to give up sleep, when getting a good night’s sleep should be at the top of everyone’s list to ensure maximum daytime performance both at work and home.”

Coping with Poor Sleep

The NSF poll also found that:

84 percent say that they just accept sleepiness and keep going.

58 percent of respondents say they consume caffeinated beverages.

38 percent say they choose foods high in sugar and carbohydrates.

37 percent say they will later take a nap.

5 percent take alerting medications.

Healthy Sleep Tips

You don’t have to be sleepy all the time or poison yourself with excessive sugar just to stay awake! Develop healthy sleep habits by following these tips:

Stick to a regular sleep schedule.

Exercise regularly, but do not exercise strenuously just before bedtime.

Avoid caffeine for eight hours before bedtime, and avoid alcohol for six hours before bedtime.

Use your bedroom only for sleep and sex. Remove distractions like TVs and computers.

Sleep in a cool, dark room. Even the slightest amount of light may disturb your sleep.

Develop a regular, relaxing bedtime routine.

Difficulty falling asleep

Difficulty staying asleep

Waking up too early

Poor quality sleep

If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, if you wake up too early, or if you still feel tired after sleeping, then you most likely suffer from insomnia.

You’re not alone; about 30% of adults have symptoms of insomnia. Symptoms of insomnia include feeling tired at grumpy during the day, having trouble concentrating at work or school, and falling asleep during the day. Other symptoms include low energy, lack of motivation, memory problems, headaches, and mood changes.

Most people experience sleep problems from time to time, but when they last for more than a couple of days, then you need to treat them, as they will begin to negatively impact your health. There are several pharmaceutical medications available for the treatment of insomnia, but they cause unpleasant side effects for many people; moreover, they don’t address the root of the problem.

Fortunately, there are also several natural remedies for insomnia. First and foremost, you should make sure that you have good sleep hygiene. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine offers the following tips to improve your sleep hygiene:

•	Don’t go to bed until you’re sleepy.
•	Plan bedtime rituals to help you relax.
•	Get up at the same time every morning.
•	Get a full night’s sleep on a regular basis.
•	If possible, avoid taking naps.
•	Stick to a regular sleep schedule.
•	Use your bed for sleep and intimate activities only.
•	Remove distractions like TVs and computers from the bedroom.
•	Avoid caffeine after lunch.
•	Avoid alcohol within six hours of bedtime.
•	Don’t go to bed hungry, but don’t eat a big meal near bedtime.
•	Exercise regularly, but avoid strenuous exercise near bedtime.
•	Avoid sleeping pills.
•	Deal with unresolved emotional issues.
•	Make your bedroom quiet, dark, and cool.

As another effective, natural remedy for insomnia, Brain Resonance Technology will assist you in developing good sleep hygiene. Utilizing binaural beats to induce specific brainwave states, Brain Resonance Technology will help you fall asleep easier, get a full night’s rest, and stick to a regular sleep schedule.

The Sounds Like Sleep series of audio tracks is the first of many Brain Resonance Technology programs to address specific health concerns. By simply listening to the appropriate audio tracks as a bedtime ritual, you can overcome insomnia naturally.

Brain Resonance Technology is safe and easy to use with no side effects, and it offers natural solutions to all types of insomnia. Whether you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleeping deeply enough, there is a Sounds Like Sleep track (or more than one) that’s ideal for you:

Regulator – Instill Balanced Sleep Patterns:
will train you to develop and maintain regular sleep patterns.

Earlier – Learn Quality Sleep Habits:
will get you to let go of distractions that prevent sleep, and you’ll enjoy more energy the next day.

Deeply – Deep Rejuvenating Sleep:
will take you into a very deep, rejuvenating sleep.

Extender – Extra Morning Sleep:
will synchronize your brainwaves, allowing you to go back to sleep when you wake up too early.

Michael Devereux is a prime example of an elderly male facing issues with interrupted sleep and tiredness during the day. Listen to his story and review below how Sounds Like Sleep audios could help Michael – and perhaps you, or a loved one you know.

Sounds Like Sleep audios – suggestions to bring relief to interrupted sleep patterns like Michael’s:
Deeply – Deep rejuvenating sleep – Helps you to drift into a deep, rejuvenating sleep
Extender – Extra morning sleep
- Helps go back to sleep when you wake up too early
Prolonger – Restores natural sleep cycles – Increase the amount of time that you sleep naturally
Healing – Extra Deep Healing Sleep – Enter the deepest state of sleep where profound healing of the body and mind occurs

Thanks Michael for sharing your story.

How much sleep do we really need? And what’s the impact on life and work when we’re sleep deprived? Here is an excellent video program from Australian Television Station SBS. Part of the INSIGHT TV program series, this discussion forum and studio audience focuses on sleep and many of the questions that surround it.

Join us in the conversation below as Betty and I review this informative video program. We have added comments on how the Sounds Like Sleep audios and Brain Resonance Technology can make a difference – and provide real relief to many of the sleep problems presented in this INSIGHT program.

Please add your comments and questions about your own experience of sleep.<!--
var playerhost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://www.ezs3.com/secure/" : "http://www.ezs3.com/players/");

The following are our suggested playlists of Sounds Like Sleep audios for the situations represented by the people featured on the SBS program above. It is often a good idea to combine more than one Sounds Like Sleep audio so that your brain can learn new ways to sleep and new balanced sleeping patterns.

Ryan (18 yrs) suffers from “Delayed Sleep Syndrome”. He sleeps very late – usually getting to sleep sometime between 12am to 3am. He often plays video games late into the night.

Sounds Like Sleep audios – suggestions:
Serenity – Quiet the Busy Mind – helps calm and ease out of constant alertness so that you can fall asleep quickly
Regulator – Instill Balanced Sleep Patterns
will train you to develop and maintain regular sleep patterns
Earlier – Learn Quality Sleep Habits:
will get you to let go of distractions that prevent sleep, and you’ll enjoy more energy the next day

Sandy (63 yrs) suffers fragmented sleep patterns after only 3-4 hours, and also has her mind ‘whirling around with fears’

Sounds Like Sleep audios – suggestions:
Assured – Release Fears, helps release inexplicable fears so that you can fall asleep with feelings of security and wellbeing
Deeply – Deep Rejuvenating Sleep, supports a very deep, rejuvenating sleep
Prolonger – Restore Natural Sleep Cycles supports an increased amount of time that you sleep

Laurie has only been getting 3 to 4 hours sleep for many years and suffers crankiness during the day and feels he is just ‘getting by’.

Sounds Like Sleep audios – suggestions:
Deeply – Deep Rejuvenating Sleep, supports a very deep, rejuvenating sleep
Extender – Extra Morning Sleep, supports you to go back to sleep when you wake up too early
Prolonger – Restore Natural Sleep Cycles helps to increase the amount of time that you sleep

Larissa (22 yrs) usually gets about 6 hours per night of sleep. Sleep is often a lower priority – after career, study and a social life.

Sounds Like Sleep audios – suggestions:
Serenity – Quiet the Busy Mind – helps calm and ease out of constant alertness so that you can fall asleep quickly
Soother – Release anxieties and worries – to alleviate the anxieties and worries that are preventing you from getting a good night’s sleep
Regulator – Instill Balanced Sleep Patterns
will train you to develop and maintain regular sleep patterns

Annette works night shift as a nurse and also has 2 children – so she never quite feels she catches up with sleep.

Sounds Like Sleep audios – suggestions:
Serenity – Quiet the Busy Mind – helps calm the mind to allow an easy transition to sleep.
Deeply – Deep Rejuvenating Sleep will support a very deep, rejuvenating sleep when you allow time to catch up on sleep.

How about you? How much sleep do you get and what are your sleeping patterns? Add to the conversation in the comments below.

Here are some informative highlights:

Professor Ron Grunstein says about 20% of Australians are not getting enough sleep (6 hours or less per night) and too many people suffer from chronic sleep problems. 5 – 10% or people complain of chronic sleep problems including sleep apnea. These are all real problems for the community.

Shantha Rajaratnam from Monash University shares how sleep loss adversely affects many different health conditions – eg sleep loss can cause obesity and weight gain, suppression of the immune system, mood disorders, depression and more. All these can all flow from metabolic problems that can be caused by sleep deficiency.

Russell Foster is a neuro-scientist from the UK. He talks about the body clock and how this can be disturbed with work patterns – especially with night shift work. “The body can feel like it is in a constant state of Jet Lag.”

Foster describes that sleep consists of two parts. We have a body clock, which provides us with an endogenous representation of the day. And that body clock is set to local time by exposure to the light-dark cycle. The clock tells the body when it is the appropriate time to go to sleep and to be awake. There is another driver, which is perhaps the intuitive part about sleep, which essentially is, the longer you’re awake the greater your need for sleep, associated with a build up of a neuro-hormone called adenosine within the brain. For good consolidated sleep, you need the body clock telling the body ‘now is good time for sleep’, and for the sleep pressure to be in sync. So disrupted sleep screws up the body clock and the sleep pressure and therefore it is very difficult to sleep at an inappropriate time of day. This situation is particularly evident – and stressful for night-shift workers.

In our research at Sounds Like Sleep, we know that the brain, that three-pound hunk of ‘gray matter’ between our ears is enormously powerful. In fact it is a complex and miraculous piece of equipment that controls all aspects of our body, mind and emotions (and more!)

Understanding the nature of sleep problems is the start. And using the brain to create change is a vital part of the solving those problems. The more we explore the nature and power of Brain Resonance Technology the more excited we are are about sharing real solutions. It is obvious that the brain can learn new patterns and pathways that give positive and healthful outcomes.
