Your Brainwave States

There are four main brainwave frequency ranges, or brainwave states: Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta – with Beta having the highest frequency and Delta having the lowest.

Beta (13-40 Hz) – awake and alert
Alpha (7-13 Hz) – awake but relaxed
Theta (4-7 Hz) – deep relaxation / REM sleep
Delta (less than 4 Hz) – deepest sleep

(Brainwave frequencies are measured by an EEG in hertz (Hz); a frequency of 1 Hz equals one cycle per second.)

When you are alert and engaged in activities like thinking, reasoning, and communication, then you’re in the Beta state. The Beta state allows you to think quickly, interact socially, draw upon logic, and improve your focus.

Binaural BeatsToo much time in the Beta state, however, can cause anxiety, stress, and paranoia, which can lead to muscle tension, depression, high blood pressure, and insomnia, among other sleep disturbances and health problems. To live a balanced, healthy life, it’s important that you allow yourself to spend sufficient time in other brainwave states.

The Alpha state is a calm yet alert state, often associated with relaxation, imagination, and daydreaming. As you drift into the first stage of sleep, your brainwaves enter the Alpha state. Tuning your brain down to Alpha helps you to relax mentally and physically, decreasing anxiety, stress, and depression.

Often called the “flow state,” Alpha state clears your mind, making it more receptive to learning new information. When you spend more time in Alpha state, you’ll find it easier to tap into your higher levels of creativity and expression. You’ll be more in touch with your intuition, and you may notice that problems seem to work themselves out.

If the brainwaves slow down further, you enter the Theta state of deep relaxation. When you dream during REM sleep, your brain is in Theta. Meditation is another method of accessing the Theta state.

The Theta state bridges our conscious and unconscious worlds and holds the key to our deepest emotional experiences. Theta brainwaves help to relieve insomnia as well as feelings of anxiety. If you’re seeking a deeper sense of being in touch with your inner life or your spirituality, then spending more time in the Theta state will allow you to tap into that which is greater than your self.

Benefits of the Theta state include sustained attention over time, enhanced creativity, boosted immune system, increased long term memory, opening the mind to suggestion and new ideas, advanced problem solving, deep meditation and deep relaxation.

Finally, the Delta state signals deep, dreamless sleep, when your body does most of its healing and rejuvenation. (That’s why it’s so important to get plenty of sound sleep every night!)

During the Delta state, the body replenishes its energy, releases anti-aging hormones like human growth hormone (HGH), relieves stress, and boosts the immune system. The Delta state rejuvenates your mind, body, and spirit.

Using Brain Resonance Technology, it is possible to coax the brain into any of the above brainwave states so that the mind and body can experience the associated benefits. This process, known as brainwave synchronization or brain entrainment, is based on the science of binaural beats.

The best feature of Brain Resonance Technology is that it’s so easy to use! You don’t need to know which brainwave states would benefit you the most; you simply need to know the desired outcome. For example, the Sounds Like Sleep series contains 10 different audios to address various sleep problems. The third audio in the series, Relaxer – Melt Away Body Tension, is designed to release body tension. If you wanted to relax your tense muscles so that you could fall asleep easier, then you’d simply listen to this audio at bedtime and feel your body’s tension melt away. Each Sounds Like Sleep audio gently guides your brainwaves through the appropriate states to best address specific problems.
