Binaural Beats
The Science of Binaural Beats
Our brain is a dynamic and evolving organ that is constantly adapting to its environment. The cells, or neurons in our brain communicate with each other across the synapses by electrical impulses or signals. One way this electrical activity can be measured is in Hertz (Hz). Hertz is a unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second.
Research has shown that the brain has four basic brainwave states, and each has a characteristic frequency. The four basic brainwave states are listed below. Explore more detailed information on ‘Your Brainwave States’.
The four states, and their corresponding frequency range, are:
Beta (13-40 Hz) – awake and alert
Alpha (7-13 Hz) – awake but relaxed
Theta (4-7 Hz) – deep relaxation / REM sleep
Delta (less than 4 Hz) – deepest sleep
Sound can also be measured by its frequency, and it has been shown that sounds can have a profound effect on the state of the brain. Have you ever listened to relaxing music and as a result, felt relaxed? The ears can only typically hear between 20 and 20,000Hz. Frequencies such as 8 Hz simply don’t register to the normal human ear. So how can we get our brains to attune to those frequencies that we can’t hear?
Discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, binaural beats were not thoroughly studied until the 1970s, when Scientific American published Dr. Gerald Oster’s article entitled, “Auditory Beats in the Brain.” Dr. Oster found that, using binaural beats, he could induce the brain to resonate at the same frequency as the beats. For example, if a pure tone of 440 Hz is presented to the right ear
and a pure tone of 430 Hz is presented to the left ear, a third “binaural beat” of 10 Hz is produced in the brain. This 10 Hz is the alpha brainwave state.
By stimulating the brain with binaural beats, we can attune the brain to the desired frequencies, and new and positive neural pathways can be generated. And as your brainwave frequencies change, your consciousness and physiological processes change, too.
Brain Resonance Technology utilizes the science of binaural beats as one of its elements to generate very specific effects in your brain. It incorporates binaural beat tools, complex calculations, algorithms, harmonics, and musical tones for each incremental segment of the audios. These specially designed audios induce changes in brainwave patterns to produce the desired outcomes in the mind and body.
Using binaural beats, it is possible to use the power of your brain to quite simply change your state of mind and your state of wellbeing; this process is often referred to as brainwave synchronization or brain entrainment, and it offers a direct path to the mind-body connection. See ‘Your Brainwave States’ for more information.
Since Dr. Oster’s work, other medical researchers have discovered numerous additional benefits of brain entrainment by using binaural beats, including whole-brain thinking, or whole-brain functioning. Please refer to Scientific Research – Binaural Beats to learn more.
The Sounds Like Sleep Audios address ten of the most common sleep problems. Simply by listening to the audios with ear buds or headphones, you will be using the power of your brain to train your mind and body to get a full and restful night of sleep. Benefits are experienced immediately – and with regular use of Brain Resonance Technology audios you will learn new sleep habits and achieve the full healing and rejuvenating effects that come from quality sleep.
